Results Worlds in Vars
The finals of the FIS Speed Skiing World Championships held in Vars (FRA) were succesfull for Merijn Vunderink. With a 11th position and a speed of 216 km/h, Merijn maintained his position in the strong international field of speedskiers. The Italian Simone Origone clocked 225 km/h and gloriously won the gold medal.
The way to the finals was an exciting couple of qualifications, were Merijn skied pretty strong. With respectively a 5th, 6th adn 7th speed the finals were reached. "According to the qualifying speeds I aimed for at least top ten, unfortunately it didn't happen" says Merijn.
With a lot of fresh snow, beautiful sunny race days and a perfect organisation, Vars put up a wunderfull worldchampionships. And if in the near future the world record of 251 km/h will be broken in Vars it will be the Speedski Mekka of the world! The Chabrières piste, known as one of the steepest in the world, is 1220 m long with an altitude drop of 495 m, a maximum slope of 98% (average slope 52.50%) and a track record of 243,9 km/h.
